The Beach Safety Program boasts a compliment of over 40 staff members including BSO’s, Captains, Assistant Captains and BSO Specialists. All BSO’s hold current National Lifeguard or Red Cross Lifeguard certification, Intermediate First Aid with CPR C and Pleasure Craft Operator certification. BSO’s complete further specialized training through Criti Care’s Beach Safety Academy which includes both classroom and waterfront components. On-going skill training and simulated scenarios take place throughout the season to ensure BSO’s are proficient and response ready.
BSO Specialists are Beach Safety Officers that have also undergone extensive emergency medical training and are registered Primary Care Paramedics, fully equipped to provide medical aid to beach patrons. 20 BSO’s patrol Birds Hill Beach and surrounding areas daily during peak season utilizing a zodiac boat, elevated observation towers, a UTV and foot patrols. Beach Safety Officers work closely with Park Patrol, Conservation Officers, RCMP, and various other public safety agencies (EMS, STARS) to fulfill our mission of providing a safer aquatic environment every day.
